Communities We Serve

Dwight EMS provides emergency medical services to:

  • Village of Dwight
  • Dwight Fire Protection District
  • Odell Fire Protection District
  • Emington–Campus Fire Protection District
  • Allen Township Fire Protection District

We also provide mutual-aid response to surrounding communities when requested.

Medical Oversight

Dwight EMS operates under EMS Region 7 with Morris Hospital providing medical oversight for our providers, protocols, and quality improvement.

Call Volume

Annual call volume: Average of 1,512

Staffing Model

Ambulance coverage:

  • One primary ALS ambulance staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • One additional ALS ambulance staffed from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., 7 days a week

All ambulances are staffed by licensed EMTs and Paramedics in accordance with EMS Region 7 and State of Illinois requirements.

Apparatus

Dwight EMS currently operates:

  • 3 advanced life support ambulances
  • 1 Non-Transport ALS Command Unit

Medical Equipment

Our ambulances are equipped with:

  • Zoll Advanced Cardiac monitors/defibrillators
  • Advanced airway management equipment
  • Life-saving medications in accordance with Region 7 SMOs
  • Mechanical CPR device LUCAS,
  • Pediatric and adult trauma and medical equipment
  • Powered Stryker Stretchers and Power loading units.

History

Dwight Emergency Medical Services was established in 1972 and has grown from a basic volunteer service into a modern, advanced life support EMS agency serving both the Village of Dwight and multiple surrounding fire protection districts.

Over the years, Dwight EMS has:

  • Expanded coverage to additional rural communities
  • Upgraded to ALS-level care
  • Implemented ongoing training and quality improvement programs
  • Partnered with regional hospitals and fire agencies to improve patient care and response times

In 1984 Dwight EMS upgraded from Basic Life Support to Intermediate Life Support service. With the ability to start IV’s, and provide advanced airways. In 1990 Dwight EMS switched EMS Systems from Will Grundy to St. Mary’s Kankakee and became Advanced Intermediate Level. This allowed the use of a cardiac monitor / defibrillator. Advanced Airways and medication administration.in1993 Dwight Ambulance Service began staffing full time during the daytime hours only from 6am-6pm. This was done by contracting employees through St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee. In 1994 Dwight Ambulance Service started providing 24 hour staffing coverage. There were 504 calls for service in 1994. Dwight EMS became an Advanced Life Support provider in 1995. In 2007 Dwight EMS contracted with Kurtz Paramedic Service to provide Paramedic and EMT personnel.   In April of 2020 the Village of Dwight Board voted to  hire EMS personnel as Village Employees. In 2020 there were 1023 calls for service. In 2024 the Village of Dwight EMS received the American Heart Association Bronze Award for Excellence in Cardiac Care.

Dwight EMS uses standard EMS billing codes and rates based on the level of care provided and mileage to the receiving facility.

  • Base rate fees (BLS/ALS services)
  • Mileage charges
  • Non-transport fees (if applicable)

CPR & Community Education

Dwight EMS believes that a prepared community saves lives.

We offer:

  • CPR/AED training for individuals, businesses, and community groups
  • Basic first aid classes
  • Community education on when to call 911 and how to prepare for emergencies
  • Car Seat Safety Inspections
